If your a typical busy modern family, getting everybody together for anything is a growing problem as kids get bigger and many start to spend way to much time alone in their own rooms. Keeping everybody circulating together may help this naturally occurring problem. The only times you have a chance to try and gather the tribe is for feeding or sharing leisure time.

If you have a formal living room and a den, chances are the den or family room is a good spot. Add more seating.
If you have the room make it more of the same type comfortable chairs, couches and love seats that are already adorn the area. Not the same in outward appearance but in an inward and inviting way. Some many family/living rooms have enough comfortable seating for 3-5 people and the rest is hard not quite as comfortable decorative seating. Get rid of this stiff stuff and make all the seating welcoming to encourage sitting and interacting for a long period of time. At least through a movie or TV show anyway!
